Now in its 13th year, the Cannon Valley Civil War Roundtable will hold its monthly meeting Sept. 21, according to a press release. It will be at the Faribault Senior Citizens Center, 19 W. Division St. in Faribault.

It will be a kick-off dinner with sloppy joes, mixed vegetables, potato salad, dessert, coffee and bottled water. There will be a $4 charge per person. Food will be served at 6 p.m. with the meeting at 7 p.m.

The presenter will be Steve Chicoine of Eden Prairie. He is an historian and author of many books, including “John Basil Turchin and the Fight to Free the Slaves.” Turchin was Russian and gained fame in 1863 at the battles of Chicamauga and Chattanooga. Those battles are arguably more of a turning point than Gettysburg and Vicksburg were. More about Turchin can be found at freedomhistory.com/book/john-basil-turchin-and-the-fight-to-free-the-slaves.
