Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• The Albert Lea High School football team defeated the Winona Winhawks 31-20. Dennis Larson led the Tigers with 159 yards rushing in 17 carries.

• Warren Peterson scored three touchdowns for the Bricelyn Braves in their 26-13 victory over Freeborn. Allen Prestegard also scored for the Braves. Bob Chicos scored for the Yeomen.

• The Alden High School football team rolled over Emmons, 46-6. Chuck Reindal scored three touchdowns, Keith VanDeer scored two, and Ron Peterson and Craig Nelson had one each for the Blackhawks.                                                                          

• New Richland, with Al Bergner scoring two touchdowns, defeated Blooming Prairie 26-6.

25 years ago: 1992

• The ALHS volleyball team shut out Waseca 3-0 by scores of 15-3, 15-4 and 15-9. Mollee Ludtke had 11 kills and Becky Schmidt had nine for the Tigers.

• In its second game of the week, the ALHS volleyball team was defeated by United South Central 3-1 by scores of 8-15, 15-12, 9-15 and 3-15. Jane Passer had 28 kills and Dawn Lutteke 18  for the Warriors. Laura Bisek had 16 kills and Julie Mullenbach  was 20 for 22 serving.                                                                             

• Quarterback Mike Mattson rushed for one touchdown and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kris Johannsen for the Alden-Conger football team in its 14-6 win over Hills-Beaver Creek.  Chris Thostensen had 10 tackles for the Knights.

• The ALHS girls’ tennis team was defeated by Austin, 4-3. Single match winners for the Tigers were Kristen Adams at No. 2 and Fay Oliver at No. 3, and the doubles winners for the Tigers were Keri Reed and Shelly Rocklin at No. 3. 

10 years ago: 2007

• The Glenville-Emmons volleyball team evened its season record at 2-2 after defeating Lyle/Pacelli 3-2 by scores of 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 15-8. Jordyn VanRyswyk had 20 kills for the Wolverines.

• The USC volleyball team defeated Alden-Conger 3-0 by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19. Samantha Sonnek and Shawnee Sovell each had six kills for the Rebels. The Knights’ season record dropped to 4-1.
