Rebels sweep Gopher Conference titles

In addition to sending two teams to the true team state meet, the United South Central/Alden-Conger boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both won the Gopher Conference championship Tuesday in Blooming Prairie.
The boys’ team won their eighth conference title in nine years by a 105-point margin and won first place in 10 events. The Rebels also placed in all 18 events.
Finishing first for the Rebels were Seth Treptow in the high hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, Dylan Baumann in the 1,600-meter run, Daniel Elmer in the 800-meter run, Tony Willette in the shot put, Riley Niebuhr in the high jump and pole vault and Teddy Wiebold in the 200-meter dash.
The Rebels 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays teams also placed first.
The Rebels also finished first and second in three events including the 200-meter dash, pole vault and 800-meter run.
The girls’ team edged New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva for first place by nine points a week after being selected as the wild card for the state true team track and field meet.
First-place finishers for the Rebels were Mikayla Gormley in the 100-meter dash and Amanda Allis in the shot put. The 4×100-, 4×200- and 4×400-meter relay teams also placed first.
Rebels coach Kent Viesselman said the team’s hurdles “piled up a bunch of points” by finishing second and third in the high hurdles and second, third and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Rebels compete again Thursday in the Section 2A subsection meet in Maple River. The section finals are June 4 at Mankato West High School.
