An Albert Lea man who allegedly possessed a knife that was 7 inches in length last week in the Freeborn County Government Center was charged with a felony on Monday in Freeborn County District Court.

Derek Wayne Hacker, 35, is charged with felony possession of a weapon in a courthouse complex.

Court documents state Hacker was charged after a deputy responded to the court services office Friday to arrest Hacker for a probation violation. Hacker was arrested and handcuffed.

Hacker reportedly informed the deputy he had a knife in his waistband, and the silver knife was found to be approximately 7 1/2 inches in length when folded open, with an approximately 3-inch blade, court documents state.

In a separate file, Hacker is charged with fifth-degree drug possession from an alleged incident earlier this year.

District Court Judge Steven Schwab released Hacker on his own recognizance on the two files. His second appearance on the first file is Oct. 5, and a settlement conference on the second file is also scheduled Oct. 5.
