Olive Leland, 1924-2017

Olive Hanson Leland, 93, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at Prairie Senior Cottages of Alexandria  from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Olive was born Sept. 14, 1924, near Peterson in Fillmore County. She was the third child of Oscar B. and Gena (Dale) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Peterson. She attended school there and graduated from Peterson High School in 1942. She then went on to attend secretarial school in Winona, and worked in Minneapolis for a time.

While working in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, she met her husband to be, Donald Leland, who was stationed at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Olive and Don were married Sept. 15, 1946, in Peterson, and recently celebrated their 71st anniversary.

The couple lived in St. Charles and Albert Lea. Don worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. until retiring in 1983. Olive worked for Morris Furniture, National Co-op and Edwards Manufacturing Co. until retiring in 1983.

They then moved to Alexandria and became members of First Lutheran Church. Olive served on the church council for three years. She was president of the Ladies Aid and a member of WELCA. She also helped in the church by counting the offering and volunteered at Douglas County Hospital. She also worked at Scandinavian Shoppe.

Olive and Don enjoyed traveling, including trips to Norway, Europe, Hawaii and all over the United States. She also loved to play bridge, any kind of cards and golf.

She is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Barbara (Allen) Rasmussen; son, Bruce (Jan) Leland; grandchildren Quinn (Amber), Anne and Jordan Rasmussen, Molly (Clarke) Comer and Maggie Leland; great-grandchildren Reagan and Cooper Rasmussen; brother, Eugene (Bernice) Hanson; sisters-in-law Lou Ann Hanson, Joyce Bengston and Lois Wallstrom; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Steven; infant granddaughter, Rachel Rasmussen; three sisters, Clarice Highum, Betty Rasmussen and Irene Hanson; brother, Ordell Gary Hanson; and four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the church. Burial will immediately follow at Kinkead Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund, 822 Douglas St., Alexandria, MN 56308.
