Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• The Albert Lea High School football team ended its season undefeated at 9-0 after defeating Red Wing 25-7. Dennis Larsen scored three touchdowns and Larry Brandt scored the other touchdown.

• Named to the Border League All-Conference football team were the following from the area high schools: Alden High School – Charles Reindal, Al Lindemann, Ron Peterson and Dick Jacobs; Keister High School – Blain Meyer, Terry Roalstad, Dennis Klock, Paul Trytten and Pat Meyer; Freeborn High School – John Miller and Terry Anderson; Emmons High School – Mike Christian.

• The Melody Bar team won the Albert Lea Touch Football League and would play Edina in the Minnesota touch football tournament. Team members were Marv Bednar, Jerry Butt, Al Brooks, Ed Mikulich, Mike Young, Gary Koeder, Dave Gilbertson, Del Hovey, Bob Benson, Frank Fry, Skip Skoog and Dave Long.

25 years ago: 1992

• The United South Central volleyball team won its second straight South Central Conference title when it defeated Blue Earth 3-1 by scores of 16-14 12-15, 15-3 and 15-6. Jane Passer had 31 kills and Dawn Lutteke added 17.

• In a first-round volleyball game in Section 2A, Sub-Section 1A Glenville-Emmons defeated Waseca 3-2 by scores of 13-15, 11-15, 17-15, 17-15 and 15-8. The Wolverines were eliminated in the next round by USC, 3-0.

• The Minnesota Vikings raised their season record to 6-2 after defeating the Chicago Bears, 38-10. Scoring touchdowns for the Viking were Roger Craig, Terry Allen, Jack Del Rio, Steve Jordan and Carlos Jenkins.

• In a section football game, Pine Island defeated NRHEG, 43-24.

• Carissa Blair of Albert Lea earned All-MICA honors in cross country at Concordia College.

10 years ago: 2007

• In a Section 2 football game in Class 2AA, Triton High School eliminated USC, 46-14. Quarterback Riley Swearingen of the Rebels threw a 53-yard pass for a touchdown and ran for  the second touchdown.

• Sophomore Sophie Miller of ALHS was named a recipient of the 2007 Wells-Fargo All-Tournament Team in Class A.
