1. Cancer education symposium

What does life look like after cancer? It is different for everyone, but most survivors say it is not the same.

The Lloyd and Ardis Peterson Cancer Education Symposium provides a chance to hear stories intended to help cancer survivors and their loved ones as they come to a new understanding of their lives. The Mayo Clinic symposium intends to help cancer survivors explore potential and engage in positive strategies moving forward.

The event is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday  at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club.

2. “Shrek the Musical”

For fans of Dreamworks’ “Shrek,” the United South Central High School drama program in Wells has a musical treat.

In the musical, Shrek the ogre goes on a mission to rescue a princess to appease the lord of a nearby kingdom, who has ruined Shrek’s swamp by turning its solace into a dumping ground for unwanted fairy-tale creatures.

This will be the final show directed by Clay Miller, as he retires after 33 years. The show runs in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

3. “The Little Mermaid”

Save yourself a scuba trip and

head under the sea with Albert Lea High School’s production of “The Little Mermaid.”

It follows the mermaid Ariel, who dreams of marrying Prince Eric but must overcome the two different worlds they live in: land and sea.

Expect a few more songs than the Disney movie, colorful costumes and familiar characters. The play runs at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

4. ‘Evergreen’ art show

The Freeborn County Arts Initiative has opened its new exhibit, “Evergreen,” to viewers. The show features work submitted for the annual all-member exhibition.

The gallery is open this weekend from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

5. Veterans Day events

A ceremony will take place Saturday to celebrate Veterans Day.

The public is welcome to stop at the Albert Lea American Legion before the ceremony for coffee and doughnuts.

The flag-raising ceremony will take place in front of the Freeborn County Courthouse at 10:50 a.m. It will be followed by an 11 a.m. program in the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners room.
