1. Christmas tree time

The opening weekend for Christmas trees at The Evergreens in Clarks Grove starts this weekend. Between 9 a.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Sunday, families can pick out a tree or a wreath, participate in family activities, enjoy treats and refreshments or browse the gift shop. The Evergreens was formerly Budd’s Christmas Tree Farm.

2. Buddy Holly tribute

Buddy Holly’s doppelganger band is on its way back to Albert Lea for a Thanksgiving weekend performance. This time, the DC Drifters’ show includes narration and some of Buddy Holly’s lesser-known music as well as the classic hits. Fans can attend at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

3. Evergreen

The annual all-member exhibition is underway at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative. The theme of the show is “Evergreen,” and it stays open through Dec. 22. You can see the exhibit from 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

4. Help others bundle up

There are several community efforts working to bring cold-weather gear to those who still need it as winter approaches quickly, including the winter outerwear drive and the warm hands, warm toes drive. Gather up gently used coats, boots, mittens, hats, socks and snowpants, and drop them off at Hy-Vee, Shopko, Walmart, Northbridge Mall, Skyline Mall, Albert Lea City Arena, Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea (warm hands, warm toes drive) or American Family Insurance (winter outerwear drive).

5. Black Friday workout

The Albert Lea Family Y is hosting a post-Thanksgiving group workout on Friday. It is free for members, and nonmembers can participate if they bring a canned food donation, which will be taken to the local food shelf. The workout runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Y gym.
