Funeral services for Doris J. Gilbert will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bridge Community Church, 2016 Bridge Ave. in Albert Lea. The Rev. Mark Miller will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bonnerup Funeral Service, 2210 E. Main St. in Albert Lea, and again one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea.

Doris Jeanne (Barnes) Gilbert, 89, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at Mayo Hospital in Mankato.

Doris was born May 15, 1928, to parents Arthur J. and Florence J. (Brownlee) Barnes in Faribault. She moved to Albert Lea in 1934 and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1946. On July 1, 1951, Doris married Jack Raymond Gilbert in Mankato.

Doris was employed as a telephone operator and supervisor at Northwestern Bell in Albert Lea for over eight years before becoming a full-time homemaker. She was a devoted wife and mother, caring for Jack in their home for 20 years after he was disabled by multiple sclerosis.

Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was involved with the Y’s Menettes, Murtaugh Extension club, neighborhood birthday luncheon group, monthly luncheons with classmates, and enjoyed making ceramics and porcelain dolls.

She was one of the oldest members (since 1939) of Bridge Community Church, formerly Calvary Baptist, where she taught a special adult Sunday school class and served on the social committee for many years.

Survivors include Doris’s son, Scott Gilbert, and his wife, Becky, of Leicester, North Carolina; son, Jon Gilbert, and his wife, Carol, of Center Point, Iowa; daughter, Kathy Opdahl, and her husband, Richard, of Alden; grandson, Blane Gilbert, and his wife, Jackie; granddaughter, Kari Schwab, and her husband, Eric; granddaughter, Brianna Opdahl; great-granddaughter, Hannah Schwab; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Jack Gilbert, in 1994; and her brother, Arthur Barnes Jr., and his wife, Elois, and their son, Keith Barnes.

Memorials are preferred to Bridge Community Church, Youth for Christ or the mission of the donor’s choice.
