A 20-year-old Albert Lea man was injured early Thursday evening after his pickup reportedly collided with a Union Pacific Railroad train west of U.S. Highway 65 between Albert Lea and Glenville.

Owen Stuart was flown by Mayo Clinic helicopter to a Rochester hospital to be treated for his injuries, according to a Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Stuart was reportedly driving a white 2004 GMC Sierra. The collision occurred at the crossing on 770th Avenue, west of Highway 65, about a mile south of Interstate 35.

Deputies were dispatched to the crash at 4:47 p.m. The initial call stated Stuart was trapped and the pickup was on fire.

When deputies responded, they found Stuart trapped in the truck, but there was no fire. Emergency crews worked to remove Stuart from the truck, and he was conscious and speaking with first responders on scene before being taken to the hospital.

On Friday the Sheriff’s Office learned Stuart had been released from the hospital. Contact was made with Stuart and another family member and they confirmed he had been released and had only suffered relatively minor injuries.

Stuart did not remember the details that led to the crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, with more information expected to be released at a later time. 

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Minnesota State Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, the Albert Lea police and fire departments, Union Pacific Railroad police and Mayo Clinic.
