To a new philosophy being implemented at United South Central Public Schools to strengthen
students.

Teachers are implementing a new way of thinking at United South Central Public Schools that is helping students to not only be motivated to take pride in their work but also improve reading scores.

Called Grit, the program teaches lessons on self-belief, exploring passions, being gracious and thankful and following other steps to lead successful, productive lives.

The philosophy, so far, sounds like it has been a success, and is encouraging self-confidence and good sportsmanship.

We look forward to seeing the longer-term effects of this implementation in the USC community.

To training taking place at Albert Lea Area Schools.

We applaud Albert Lea Area Schools for taking extra development days to teach teachers and staff how to respond in school shooter situations. The training empowered teachers and staff, and we hope will in turn empower students as well once the training is given to them.

While everyone can agree that they hope they never have to use the training they have learned, it is good to be prepared in case of the worst.

To Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

While it is sad that the month has to exist, we thank all those who are raising awareness this month of human trafficking. Organizers with Strength and Dignity Inc., the Albert Lea Police Department and other organizations on Thursday showed a documentary about human trafficking and led a panel discussion on the issue. Two free self-defense courses for women have also been scheduled for this month.

Organizers hope the month educates the community of the red flags of human trafficking and is a reminder that the issue happens in both rural areas and big cities.

To the Vikings.

Whether you are a sports fan or not, it has been fun to see the success of the Vikings this year — particularly during what has come to be known as the “Minneapolis miracle,” with wide receiver Stefon Diggs’s last-play touchdown last Sunday that sent the Vikings to the NFC championship game with a 29-24 victory over the Saints.

We wish the team success on Sunday against the Eagles. Much of Albert Lea, the state and the region will be cheering you on.

Let’s jump that last hurdle to the Super Bowl.
