An Albert Lea man who is facing charges for reportedly striking another man in the face last April pleaded guilty Wednesday in Freeborn County District Court.

Cody Rhyns

Cody Shawn Rhyns, 47, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault on the second day of a jury trial.

Court documents state Rhyns was charged after he stole cocaine from a neighbor. The victim confronted Rhyns about the theft.

Rhyns admitted answering the door and striking the victim in the face. When the door opened, another man, identified as Donald Maurice McCormick, reportedly pointed a rifle at the victim.

The victim suffered an injury to his left eyebrow.

Neither Rhyns or McCormick admitted possessing a firearm.

Rhyns did not enter a guilty plea to being an ineligible person in possession of a firearm, and that charge was dismissed. His sentencing is scheduled for March 30.

McCormick, 21, pleaded guilty to assisting Rhyns in the assault and was placed on probation for up to five years in September 2016 after pleading guilty earlier that year to terroristic threats.
