Man killed when vehicle strikes squad car on I-35

A Mason City man was killed Friday when a vehicle he was driving struck a Worth County Sheriff’s Office squad car stopped on Interstate 35 in Worth County.

Johnnie Lee Waslick, 65, of Mason City was killed in the crash. Worth County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Zachary Schrupp, 30, of Northwood was treated at Mercy Medical Center and released.

Waslick was driving a 2011 Ford Focus south on Interstate 35 on the inside lane at 9:27 p.m. when he struck the patrol car, a 2017 Chevy Tahoe, driven by Schrupp, which was on the inside shoulder lane warning motorists of a crash ahead, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The Focus reportedly came to rest on the outside shoulder facing east, and the Tahoe came to rest in the median facing east.

The crash, which took place north of Iowa Highway 9, is under investigation, according to the report.

Mercy Air medical services, Hanlontown and Fertile fire departments, Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement Agency assisted on scene.

1 injured in Faribault County crash

A 16-year-old boy was injured Saturday in a rollover crash on Interstate 90 in eastern Faribault County.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

He was driving a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE east on the interstate when it went off the roadway and rolled at about 6 p.m. Saturday, 1.2 miles west of the Faribault and Freeborn County line, according to the Minnesota State Patrol report.

Roads were dry at the time of the crash.

Faribault County Sheriff’s Office and Wells ambulance volunteers assisted on scene.
