The man has been identified as Jose Ignacio Martinez-Navidad.

The release stated Steinhauer was traveling north on 700th Avenue in a 2003 Buick LeSabre at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, when he reportedly failed to stop for a stop sign and was struck broadside by Martinez-Navidad’s 1981 Honda motorcycle that was traveling west on County Road 46.

The operator of the motorcycle received severe injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Albert Lea Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A Mayo helicopter was called in but was later cancelled.

Steinhauer was not injured.

Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office investigator Bob Kindler said he could not release any details about why Steinhauer was taken into custody. Charges will be reviewed by the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Minnesota State Patrol, Conger First Responders, Albert Lea Medical Center staff, the Freeborn County Highway Department and Allen’s Tow & Travel.

A second motorcycle crash occurred at 8:50 p.m. Friday when motorcyclist Roni Dean VanRiper, 52, reportedly hit a deer on Freeborn County Road 13 about two miles east of Myrtle.

VanRiper was transported by a Mayo helicopter as a precautionary measure, Kindler said.
