Roads in Albert Lea and the surrounding areas were completely covered in ice as of late Monday morning, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

People are advised to be prepared for slippery roads and use caution while driving.

Freezing rain began in south central Minnesota around 7 a.m., and mixed precipitation — including possible freezing rain, snow and sleet — is expected to continue Monday afternoon and through the night before transitioning over to snow on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service states power outages and tree damage are likely because of ice.

Up to a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation will be possible where the predominate precipitation is freezing rain. In areas where freezing rain, sleet and snow occurs, ice could accumulate up to one-tenth of an inch.

Freeborn County and much of southern Minnesota remain under a winter weather advisory through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
