USC baseball season ends like last season

Too many walks and too many errors cost the United South Central baseball team Thursday against Norwood-Young America in the consolation bracket of the Section 2AA tournament in Norwood.

The Rebels (11-12) walked eight batters and hit another three while committing four error in a 14-4 season-ending loss.

The errors came in the second and the sixth, and the Raiders took advantage by scoring four runs in each frame.

It had been a 6-4 ballgame after the top of the fifth, but Norwood-Young America scored seven runs in the final two innings to trigger the 10-run rule.

Eric Lackey drove in two runs in the third inning with a single and A.J. Dreyer connected for a solo blast in the fifth inning.

“We were just a little flat,” said USC head coach Pat Frank. “Tuesday, I think took a lot out of us. We needed to come ready to play in a playoff game and we didn’t.”

The Rebels ended the season in the exactly the same manner as last despite losing six seniors and revamping most of the infield.

“I was pleased with the year because I know it’s something we can build on,” Frank said. “It was a rebuilding year and if I can win 11 games in a rebuilding year I’ll take it.”
