The United South Central/Alden-Conger track and field teams capped a busy week Saturday by bringing home the boys’ state Class A true team championship.
The Rebels boys’ battled the weather as well as the competing teams to finish as the top Class A team in Minnesota, just 4 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Morris Area, and 5 1/2 points ahead of third-place Winona Cotter.
“As close as it sounds, it was actually closer,” Rebels coach Kent Viesselman said. “There were actually four teams within six points until the last two events, and each of the four teams had led at some point late in the competition.
“The scoring system is designed to reward depth and balance, and that’s what it did. We won only one event in the competition, but our first entries were near the front, and our second entries were’t far behind.”
Finishing in first place for the Rebels was the 4X200-meter relay team of Thane O’Rourke, Chris Melby, Jannik Rosemeyer, and Teddy Wiebold. Teddy Wiebold (200-meter dash), Riley Niebuhr (high jump), and Tony Willette (shot put and discus) all recorded second-place finishes.
“There were a number of key events,” Visselman said. “We did very well in the sprints and sprint relays, and of course the pole vault, which was the last result turned in that solidified the win.”
The Rebels girls’ team also performed well, earning ribbons for their 6th place finish.
“I’m just as pleased with our girls,” Viesselman said. “We expect juniors and seniors to handle a certain amount of pressure and adverse weather conditions, but our girls’ team was amazing.”
Hannah Goemann had the top individual finish for the girls with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run. Amanda Allis chipped in a third-place finish in the shot put. Kendall Ward added a fourth-place finish in the high hurdles. Hannah Goemann added a fourth-place finish in the high jump and another in the 1,600-meter run. The top finish for a relay team was the third-place performance turned in by Shayna Stevermer, Nancy Christianson, Anissa Janzig, and Goemann. The best individual event for the Rebels for the Rebels, where Allis and Allie Voigt went 3-8.
“Another thing that I think contributed to the great performance was the support of the parents and fans, and of their team mates who were in attendance. Every meet is a home meet for us,” Viesselman said.
