Historic might be the best way to describe Minnesota women’s swimming and diving performance at the NCAA Championship meet in Columbus, Ohio.

The Gophers 10th place finish came with a total of 157 points, which is the second most in program history scored by the Gophers at the NCAA meet.

In total the Gophers saw 12 All-American finishes, five of which were honorable mention and two new school record times. With the top-10 finish, Minnesota has now placed 10th or better in four of the last six meets while posting a 13th or better finish in 12 of the last 13 years.

Sending 10 student-athletes to this year’s meet, the Gophers have now sent 10 or more student-athletes to the NCAAs for 13 straight years.

The fun facts don’t end there,  for the first time in the women’s program history, Minnesota collected three top-eight All-American finishes in the relay events (200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay).

Individually Lindsey Kozelsky became the second women’s swimmer to collect four top-eight All-American accolades at a single NCAA meet (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay). Gopher alumni Gretchen Hegener accomplished the same feat in the exact same events at the 1997 NCAA Championship.

“It’s a real testament to the student-athletes who have been committed to this level of swimming and diving year after year for us and I would like to thank all of them,” said head coach Kelly Kremer. “I want to thank our captains, our NCAA team, our student-athletes supporting them from home, our incredible coaching staff, our support staff, our alumni, parents and fans for another great year!”

As a freshman, Kozelsky worked her way to an 11th place finish in the consolation finals in the 200 breaststroke. Now, one year later, she is earning All-American honors placing 7th in the championship finals for the event, touching in at 2:07.69. She finishes the meet with four All-American honors to bring her career total to seven in her first two seasons as a Gopher.

The Maroon and Gold had two All-American Honorable Mention divers compete in the platform consolation finals. Kristen Hayden came in 11th after posting a finals score of 259.55 points and Morgan Justus followed in 12th place, setting a new personal best with 253.55 points.

The last relay of the NCAA Championships was the 400 freestyle. Tevyn Waddell, Chantal Nack, Zoe Avestruz and Danielle Nack placed 21st with a time of 3:15.83, improving on their 3:16.04 timestamp from the NCAAs last year.

In the preliminary rounds in the morning, C. Nack represented the Maroon and Gold in the 200 backstroke, placing 28th with a time of 1:54.10. Mackenzie Padington placed 52nd in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 50.50 and D. Nack touched the wall at 1:56.57 to place 27th in the 200 butterfly.
