Memorial services for Mildred E. Olson, 91, of Albert Lea, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Mark Niethammer will officiate. Mildred died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Thorne Crest Retirement Community.
Mildred Edvina Olson was born on Nov. 24, 1919, to Otto and Gunhild Skatter in Joice, Iowa. She grew up in Joice where she went to school. After school, Mildred moved to Minneapolis to work as a housekeeper where she met DeWitt. On June 20, 1946, Mildred was united in marriage to DeWitt Olson in Minneapolis. They then moved to Emmons and opened a beauty salon in their home. Once Julie and Judy were born, the couple moved to Albert Lea and opened Olson’s Beauty Salon. After DeWitt passed, Mildred sold the salon and worked for Angles & Lines. In her retirement Mildred kept busy crocheting, doing arts and crafts projects and was an excellent painter. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Blessed be her memory.
Survivors include her daughters: Julie (Gary) Newberg and Judy (Bob) Olinger; grandchildren: Scott (Solveig) Newberg, Tami Newberg, Andrea Olinger, Kristi (Bob) Garfinkel, Gina (Joe) Hope and Chad Olinger; great-grandchildren: Sophia and Carson, Hope and Soren Newberg; brother, Alfred Skatter; sisters-in-law: Hazel Skatter and Jan Skatter; and many nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death her parents; husband, DeWitt; brothers and sisters: Obert Skatter, James Skatter, Ruth (David) Loehr and Agnes Skatter; sister -in-law, Bernice Skatter.
