Duplicate Bridge

Eleven teams played Duplicate Bridge on May 22 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Loren Cleland and Dave Ring, first place; Barb Rofshus and Lorraine Quinliven, second place; Lorraine Lippert and Phil Lippert, third place; John Liesen and Rick Stroup, fourth place; and Gail and Ray Schmidt, fifth place.

Five full tables played Duplicate Bridge on May 23 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Dave Ring and Orrin Roisen, first place; Larry Crowe and Jim Fisher, second place; Gail and Ray Schmidt, third place; Harriet Oldenberg and Millie Seiver, fourth place; Phil and Lorraine Lippert, fifth place; and Loren Cleland and Bud Higgins, sixth place.

Duplicate Bridge is played at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and noon and Wednesdays. Players come from Adams, Austin, Albert Lea, Rose Creek, Northwood and Mason City. All bridge players are welcome to come and play.

American Legion Auxiliary

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56 meeting on April 4 began with opening ceremonies by Jo Hanson followed by the treasurer’s report. The chaplin presented a memorial service for the past year’s deceased members. Three new members were introduced before the group heard committee reports.

National security mailed 24 boxes of coupons this past year. Children and Youth collected 564 pounds of healthy snacks this year.

Poppy Day was on May 18.

Megan Raatz was the guest speaker for the meeting. Raatz is a Girl Scout working for her Silver Award with a project helping the homeless. She is collecting donations and items to place in care bags to hand out.

The following recommendations were approved: Department president project, district president project, commanders project, Legionville, Albert Lea Firefighters, Legion youth baseball team and Nation of Patriots.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday and will include a presentation of the years of service awards to the group’s members.

St. John’s Auxiliary

St. John’s Auxiliary met May 21 in the chapel. President Junan Beenken opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and announced the reason for the auxiliary. He said it is to do things for residents they wouldn’t otherwise have, such as the garden project, gifts for them, etc.

Devotions were given by the Rev. Don Malinsky.

Secretary Bonnie Schneider read the revised constitution and members voted to approve it.

Treasurer Patti Kimble gave her report. The report was approved.

The fundraiser was reportedly a success.

The group sang “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” and “I Love to Tell a Story” accompanied by Cindy Gandrud on the piano.

Volunteer hours from January to May were recorded to be 2,151.

The program was a sing-a-long. The group sang “Amazing Grace,” “Blest Be the Tie that Binds,” “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Jesus Loves Me.”

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 20 in the chapel.

The Lord’s Prayer was recited and the meeting was adjourned.
