Women Veterans of Freeborn County

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Women Veterans of Freeborn County was June 6 at American Legion Post 56 in Albert Lea.

Women veterans present included Judi Olson, Deanna Luedtke, Joan Paszkowski, Gloria Dirksen, Ruth Bodine, Sandy Maiden, Pat Johannsen, Ruth Perry, Amy Mayers and Barb Babb.

Bodine was welcomed as a new member, who is also new to the area.

Luedtke handed out the minutes from the last meeting.

Mayers mentioned she works with Vietnam veterans. With their all poor treatment upon returning from Vietnam, the undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and personal issues, she said alcoholism is a very serious problem with this sector of society. Alcoholism can also cause a specific kind of dementia.

Luedtke said that in addition to a large tub of articles donated to the Minneapolis homeless women veterans shelter, the group collected $125. The money was deposited and a check was sent to aid in purchasing supplies.

The group will meet at 4:30 p.m July 3 at American Legion Post 56 to attend the parade.

The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. July 11 at Packowski’s home.

The treasurer’s report  was given. Luedtke asked Judi Olson to take over the treasury.

Johannsen made a motion to contribute funds for gas when a privately-owned vehicle is used for various functions or road trips. The motion was seconded and passed. The amount will be decided by the distance driven.

Maiden will take the food donations to the food pantry.
