The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Albert Lea and much of southern Minnesota.

High temperatures in the mid- to upper 90s will combine with high humidity to yield heat indices in the 100 to 110 range.

The conditions create a situation in which heat illnesses are likely for those active outdoors or those susceptible to heat illnesses, such as children and the elderly.

People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

When possible, people should reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

The warning is in effect until 10 p.m.

The Albert Lea Salvation Army will have a cooling station from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday in its building at 302 Court St. There will also be a cooling station set up under a tent with cooling fans and water on Friday and Saturday.
