An Albert Lea man who reportedly struck a woman with the handle of a knife in January 2017 was sentenced to more than three years in prison Friday in Freeborn County District Court.
Jonathan Silvestre Viera, 29, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty in April to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and terroristic threats. He was given credit for 552 days served.
He will serve his sentence at Minnesota Correctional Facility-St. Cloud.
Court documents state Viera was charged after officers were alerted to an assault Jan. 9, 2017, in Albert Lea. Officers spoke to the victim — known to Viera — who reported she and Viera had gotten into an argument because he was upset she was leaving the house.
Viera reportedly struck her in the head, stomach and threatened to kill her while he held a knife over her head. He struck her with the handle of the knife and took away her phone when she attempted to call for help.
She stated children were home at the time, and Viera was on drugs during the incident.
Viera was charged with felony terroristic threats and gross misdemeanor 911 interference, but those charges were dismissed.
Viera was sentenced to 180 days in Steele County District Court on June 15, 2017, after pleading guilty to gross misdemeanor domestic assault in connection with the incident in May 2017. He was given credit for 164 days served.
