I-35 lane closure to begin soon

Northbound Interstate 35 motorists will encounter single lane traffic north of Albert Lea beginning Monday as crews construct access lanes to a new weigh station, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The northbound driving lane of I-35 will be closed from mile marker 14 to 18 for one month, weather permitting. Northbound motorists may experience short traffic delays. Both southbound I-35 lanes will remain open.

Crews are improving the lanes in and out of the new weigh station. During this project, crews will also construct a new building at the existing weigh station site and install weigh-in-motion sensors on the northbound lanes of I-35.

The weigh-in-motion system is a series of devices to record axle and gross vehicle weights while a vehicle drives over a measurement site in the road. The weighing process is more efficient for trucks because the weight is measured while the vehicle is in motion on the road.

Ulland Brothers of Virginia is the prime contractor on the $2 million project. Construction is expected to be completed in early November.
