Chapter 790 President Larry Paul of the Vietnam Veterans of America is welcoming all veterans of all eras to celebrate the 15th annual All Veterans-All Eras Family BBQ Picnic, according to a press release. The picnic will be at noon Saturday at the Worth County Fairgrounds shelter, 300 13th St. N. in Northwood, to honor servicemen from around the region.

Paul said he has seen the event grow larger every year as word of the social event has spread among veterans.

“Bringing veterans of all branches of service from all eras together is what this event is all about,” he said. “We encourage each veteran to bring new veterans along to enjoy the camaraderie among all age groups.”

In 2003, the first picnic had 22 guests, and Paul said they now see 500-plus veterans and family members.

Hosting the picnic is the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 790, comprised of veterans from all branches of service living in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.

The VVA chapter will serve the traditional American-style menu — grilling up burgers, brats and hot dogs, with baked beans and lemonade.

“We always make room for a terrific variety of appetizers, fruit bowls, side dishes, all kinds of salads and desserts that most folks bring to share — especially the desserts,” Paul said.

He asked the people do not bring platters, as they will provide the plates and utensils. Accommodations are made by volunteers to help those needing plate assistance.

Paul said Bob and Friends Band will be back as great entertainment. He suggested people come early to check out fundraiser items and get their free ticket for door prize drawings. All family members and guests of veterans are encouraged to attend.

Paul said supporting one another is key, and that this year the VVA will extend their gratitude to Diamond Jo and Mrs. Gerry’s for their in-kind donations over the years as they honor all local veterans.

“Spread the word about the picnic among your veteran buddies and shake the hand of every veteran you meet today,” Paul said. “Tell them how much you appreciate the sacrifices they made, as well as by their loved ones, to protect and serve our country.”
