An 81-year-old man died Wednesday evening when the lawn mower he was riding tipped over on him in a drainage ditch in northeastern Freeborn County.

David Albert Spinler was reportedly found in the ditch by his wife and a neighbor at 28356 890th Ave. in Newry Township, according to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.

The mower was reportedly found upside down on top of him, and there was water in the ditch, the report states.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, it is unknown what led to the incident, which was reported to authorities at 6:26 p.m.

The medical examiner was contacted.
