The United South Central football team took on the No. 4-ranked Mayer Lutheran on Friday night.

After giving up a touchdown on the second play of the game, the Rebels bounced back to score 28 unanswered points and upset the Crusaders, 28-21.

A 70-yard touchdown early in the game was the only score of the first quarter and put the Rebels in a hole right from the start.

Senior Colby Klocek got the Rebels fanbase excited in the second quarter when he caught a pass and ran it 68-yards inside the Crusader 10. Junior Isaac Meyer capped the drive off with a 1-yard sneak to score.

Meyer wasn’t done in the second quarter just yet, running in for another touchdown, this time a 26-yard rush to put the Rebels up 14-4 at halftime.

Junior Zach Niebuhr was a playmaker in the second half, scoring touchdowns on a 16-yard run in the third quarter and a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders made a bit of a comeback in the end by scoring twice on big offensive plays, but the offensive line and Niebuhr were able to run the clock out with three first downs to end the game.

“Anytime you can go on the road and get the (win) it’s great, but to go on the road for over two hours, play the No. 4 team in the state and have the type of fan and community support we had was incredible,” said head coach Brandon Neseth. “Carson Wegner, George Bias, Micah Hamson, Jake Stevermer and Keagan Meyer played an incredible game on the offensive line and our quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers were able to come up with big plays throughout the game.

Overall we had 407 yards of total offense and 317 rushing yards and limited Mayer Lutheran to seven points for three and a half quarters, it was a heck of a team effort by our players and coaches.”
