Local churches are hoping the good response from community members last year only grows for this year’s Golfing for the Gospel event on Saturday.

The event, hosted by Wedgewood Cove, is a cooperation between the golf club and some area churches. Last year’s event raised over $43,000 to support local charities The Arc of Freeborn County, the Salvation Army and Youth For Christ’s The Rock.

Although organizers are hoping this year also brings in support for the same three charities, Wedgewood Director of Golf Donnie Teeter said that goal is secondary. Instead, the focus is on families and community-building.

“It’s supposed to be a fellowship opportunity for families to come out, have fun and then hear a great message and a free-will meal — trying to just get the community together and see what happens,” he said. He said organizers are hoping to build on last year’s success and to increase attendance.

Teeter said Wedgewood served around 200 meals last year, although he noted that number does not necessarily include everyone who attended the event.

“I believe the church needs to go beyond the church walls,” First Lutheran Church and Golfing for the Gospel committee member Lynn Kermes said. He sees the event as an opportunity for people to come together outside the church.

In addition to the golf tournament, the event offers children’s activities like nine square, bounce houses, bean bags, a mini-golf putting challenge and knockerball. After lunch, Wedgewood Cove owner Jerry Vogt said Chris Utz, a physical therapist for Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea and Austin, will speak about how God has affected his life. He said the event will tell a story, allow people to have fun and help local charities via a summertime giving boost.

The four-person best shot golf tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Saturday. Children’s and family activities go from 10 a.m. to noon. Lunch is served from noon to 1 p.m., and Utz will speak shortly after lunch. Tournament participation has a suggested $50 donation per player. Wedgewood Cove is donating use of its facility, so entry fee money goes toward the event. To register, call the Wedgewood pro shop at 507-373-2007.
