The Albert Lea Tigers baseball team received good news Wednesday with the announcement of the Section 1AAA tournament seedings.
The No. 3-seeded Tigers will host the No. 10 Winona Winhawks at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hayek Field. The Tigers swept the season series against the Winhawks 5-3 and 6-0.
“I think this is the best we could have hoped for,” Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski said. “You could make an argument for Red Wing, Owatonna or us to be Nos. 3, 4 or 5.”
The Tigers are seeded behind No. 1 Rochester Century and No. 2 Rochester John Marshall. Both teams swept the Tigers this season.
Red Wing was seeded fourth and Owatonna fifth in the 12-team section tournament. The Tigers didn’t play Red Wing, a member of the Missota Conference, and split a home doubleheader with Owatonna.
The Tigers beat Winona 5-3 in their season opener on April 5 and 6-0 in Winona on April 29. The Winhawks have lost seven of their last nine games dating back to May 7.
Still, Sczublewski said the Tigers must be prepared to avoid a first-round upset like last year.
“They play hard, scratch for runs and hustle,” he said. “We’ll certainly need to play our best ball to beat them.”
