Letter: Vote for change at the Capitol

Published 10:09 pm Thursday, November 1, 2018

Rep. Peggy Bennett has voted with Republican Party leader Kurt Daudt on over 95 percent of the votes she has made in the Minnesota House of Representatives. This percentage is based on the votes that matter (floor motions, amendments, bill passage and veto overrides), not procedural votes such as quorum calls. Is this the kind of leadership we want in the Minnesota House of Representatives?

I respect Rep. Bennett as a teacher and a person. She was my son’s second-grade teacher at Sibley, and I know she makes an effort to attend public events in our district and talk to people. In her public appearances and in her debates with Terry Gjersvik, she is gracious and measured in her answers.

But her voting record is not gracious and measured. She votes with the Republican leadership over 95 percent of the time. That is her right, but I do not believe it represents a good-faith effort to reach bipartisan solutions. Neither does it do a good job of representing all the people of our district.

If you would like to reduce partisan gridlock at the state Capitol, I encourage you to vote for change. Vote for Terry Gjersvik.
