Jenna Hegwood, second-grade teacher at Halverson Elementary School, created a sensory path for students.

A sensory path is a path where students are to complete the given tasks in order to help regulate and calm their bodies. Research defines the proprioceptive system as understanding sense of self as well as how defining within surroundings. Research has shown completing a series of physical fine and gross motor activities promotes proprioceptive sensory input (body awareness to surroundings), building connections within the developing brain’s neural pathways in order to help children stay calm and regulate their bodies effectively. This in turn allows students to complete learning tasks within the classroom while having that sense of self awareness or self recognition. The sensory path is used within the building by all grade levels to promote a purposeful sensory break. Each activity within the path was designed specifically to promote stimulation where needed in order to best meet the needs of students.
