5 things to do this weekend

1. A Bluegrass Christmas

Whether it’s “Blue Christmas” with a banjo or “Silver Bells” on fiddle strings, Monroe Crossing will lend a decidedly toe-tapping take on many Christmas favorites Friday night at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Rich vocal harmonies and quick fingers bring new life to much-loved melodies. Kick off Christmas with Monroe Crossing at 7:30 p.m.

2. Model Railroad Show

Missing a piece for the perfect under-the-tree Christmas train scene? The 23rd Annual Model Railroad Show and Swap Meet is back. The show will include six display layouts in different scales. This year’s event also includes a new location at the National Guard Armory. Admission is $3 for those over 16. The show will be from 9 to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

3. Painting party

Want more DIY decor for the holiday season? The Albert Lea Art Center is hosting a painting class. Those who participate will learn to paint a red Christmas ball hanging from a pine tree branch on pallet board. Supplies are provided. Participants need to register ahead of time by calling The Albert Lea Art Center. The class is $35 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

4. Sweets and treats

Stock up on edible gifts, keep some for yourself or get inspired at St. Theodore Catholic Church’s Christmas bake sale both Saturday and Sunday. Cookies and candy are sold per pound. Offerings will also include cakes, cupcakes and bread. Proceeds from the sale, which runs from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. until supplies run out Sunday in Marian Hall, are split between the church, faith formation, Hispanic ministry and St. Theodore School.

5. Go wild

For the 34th year, Geneva’s wild game feed is on. Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at Geneva Bar and Grill, the feed includes selections such as alligator, duck, frog legs, goose, pheasant, wild turkey, fish, venison and more. A gun raffle begins at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the game feed go to the Eagles Cancer Telethon.
