The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team hosted Minnehaha Academy on Saturday with hopes of avenging an overtime loss to Owatonna last Thursday.

The Tigers put up a goal in each period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Redhawks, losing by just one goal 4-3.

The Redhawks started the scoring early with a goal just over six minutes into the game. The Tigers came right back with a goal of their own, however, a little more than three minutes later. Scoring the unassisted goal for the Tigers was sophomore Markus Dempewolf.

With under three minutes to go in the first, Minnehaha jumped out to the lead once again, taking a 2-1 advantage in to the second.

The Redhawks poured it on in the second period, taking a 4-1 lead with goals at the 11:07 and 8:30 marks. Albert Lea closed the gap slightly with two minutes remaining when junior Cole Wentzel scored a goal assisted by junior Danny Chalmers and sophomore Spencer Clark.

Entering the third period, the two-goal Redhawks lead would prove to be too much for the Tigers to overcome. Wentzel added a second goal to his total with 1:47 left in the game, assisted by sophomore Blake Ulve, but it wasn’t enough and the Tigers came away with their second consecutive loss.

Albert Lea had plenty of opportunities to score, totaling 34 shots on goal compared to Minnehaha Academy’s 20 shots on goal. However, Minnehaha was able to make shots count when they needed them to.

Starting in the net for the Tigers was senior Jake Ball, who totaled 16 saves on the night.

The Tigers fall to 0-2 to start the season and will be back on the ice at Winona on Tuesday to face an 0-3 Winhawks team and Thursday against the Packers of Austin.
