Local United Way warns about fraudulent emails

The United Way of Freeborn County is warning community members that someone has fraudulently used the local United Way to request information regarding a local holiday campaign.
The organization advised in a press release it is not involved in a holiday drive and asked residents not to share information with the sender.
The email sent out states the following:
“i am from the united way charity in freeborn county and we are trying to reach out to you and other low income families to help bring joy over the holiday season we would like to set you up with a family that will pick some toys and clothes for the children and necessities like food vouchers and gift cards for you and ur children to enjoy for the holidays if you are interested please let me know via email

Childrens age, gender, clothing size tops and bottoms, and shoe size”
The United Way press release asked residents to report all incidents to the United Way by calling 507-373-8670 or contacting the Albert Lea Police Department at 507-377-5215.
The report was made Wednesday.
United Way staff contacted the Police Department, which is investigating the matter.
