50 years ago: 1969
• The Lea College Lancers basketball team was preparing for its upcoming game against the Yankton College Greyhounds. Howard Wilkens, a 6-foot-2-inch sophomore from Glencoe, Illinois, was the team’s scoring leader with 23.6 points per game
• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated St. Paul Mechanic Arts 4-3. Charlie Evans, Dick Humphrey, Mike Braun and Ken Lien scored for the Tigers.
• First and Last Chance Liquor and Streater were leading the Southside Bowling League with records of 14-2. Terry Jensen had the high series for the week with a 572, with Dennis Jensen rolling a 565 and Dick Anfinson 559.
25 years ago: 1994
• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team went on the road and were defeated by Rochester Mayo 73-59. Brendan Danielsen led the Tigers with 15 points and Pete Breitholtz added 12.
• The Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team fell to 1-8 on the season with losses to Southland, 77-56, and Lyle, 73-70. Brian Cipra led the Wolverines in both games with 13 and 16 points, respectively.
• The Minnesota Vikings were defeated by the New York Giants 17-10 in a wild card playoff game played at Giants Stadium. Cris Carter’s 40-yard pass from Jim McMahon was the lone touchdown for the Vikings, who finished the season 9-8.
10 years ago: 2009
• In the seventh annual Clash in Rochester, the Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team lost to two nationally-ranked teams. After falling 47-15 to Montini Catholic (of Illinois) 47-15, they were defeated 33-21 by Blue Springs (of Missouri). Cory Hansen and Matt Tiegs were the only two Tigers to win both their matches.
• Tim Brewster’s Minnesota Gophers football team was defeated by Kansas 42-21 in the Insight Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
• The Alden-Conger Knights girls’ basketball team lost to Windom in the final game of the Windom Invitational. Katie Hallman led the Knights with 17 points, with Megan Miller adding 12.
