Area schools are canceling classes today because of weather.

Closing are Albert Lea Area Schools, Alden-Conger Schools, Glenville-Emmons Schools, Lake Mills Community Schools, Northwood-Kensett Community Schools and NRHEG Schools.

Interstate 90 and Interstate 35 from the Iowa border to Ellendale were listed as completely covered in ice and snow as of 9 a.m., according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. From Ellendale north, roads were listed as partially covered.

Southern Minnesota remains under a winter weather advisory until midnight Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, a brief period of freezing drizzle is still possible along the Iowa border through the early morning. Periods of light snow are expected, with precipitation ending in portions of southwest and east central Minnesota before noon. The light snow will gradually end from New Ulm to Faribault by late afternoon.

Another band of light snow is expected later this afternoon and through the evening across far southern Minnesota.

According to the Weather Service, snowfall amounts will range from 1 to 3 inches from New Ulm to the Twin Cities and 3 to 5 inches from Albert Lea, to Red Wing and Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Winds will increase tonight to around 20 to 25 mph, which could cause some blowing and drifting snow.
