Notes from the Sports Desk by Tyler Julson

The winter sports postseason is starting to gain some steam this week. Lake Mills wrestling punched its ticket to the state dual tournament Tuesday night by winning its regional duals. This marks the fourth straight year it’ll make an appearance. It also has seven wrestlers vying for an individual state tournament appearance Saturday afternoon, along with two wrestlers from Northwood-Kensett.

The girls’ hockey team played its first section game Wednesday night. As of writing this column, I’m not sure what the outcome will be, but I wish them the best either way.

Albert Lea wrestling seems to be hitting on all strides coming into its last regular season dual Thursday night. It had a huge win over fourth-ranked St. Michael-Albertville over the weekend and hopefully can carry that momentum over to the postseason. I think they’ve clinched a home dual in the first round of sections, but I’m not certain just yet.

Technically, the PGA season has been playing since October, but I like to think of the Waste Management Open as the tournament that kicks off the best part of the season. Congratulations to Rickie Fowler for finally getting that win there after a couple rough years in the tournament. We are two short months away from one of the greatest weekends of the year, the Masters weekend. I saw a statistic that said the last time the Patriots beat the Rams in the Super Bowl, Tiger Woods won both the following Masters tournament and U.S. Open, and we all know how the Super Bowl ended. It’s all up to Tiger now.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, would it be too much to say I told you so? Maybe once sports gambling makes its way to Minnesota, I’ll start making a killing. However, looking back at my Prognosticators score makes me think twice.
