Letter: Thumbs down for county taking away voter rights

In a recent article, Freeborn County Administrator Tom Jensen states, “My biggest concern is you are operating under a system that was affected in 1858, and the reason was because the job was originally appointed, but the people appointed were appointed because of favors.”

Why do we continue to vote in commissioners? Why do we continue to vote in a sheriff and a county attorney? Because, Jensen, it is called balance and fairness within your government!

Sadly, in 2019, people are still hired and appointed within the county with “favors” with “favorites” and “with a good ole boy mentality.” Mr. Jensen knows that truth very well!

Until the county is fully merit-based and not point-based that can be altered, changed or manipulated by the boy’s club to go a certain way, know there is no fairness within the county hiring system.

Merit is a system used by part of Freeborn County at DHS. It is like a neutral third party that makes sure all hiring decisions are made consistently, fairly and correctly. References, Veteran’s Preference, educational backgrounds, work experience and references are checked. Even tests are given. The system will give you a list of who you can choose from basically taking the buddy system out of the equation. It is truly fair and unbiased.

Now, this group of men want to limit even more the county voters’ rights by making two positions appointed. Will it stop there or will they attack other voter rights? I am deeply disturbed the Albert Lea Tribune would support this move without all the details.

I encourage all Freeborn County residents to ask questions. Call your commissioners. Maybe they will return your call! This issue is simply about control and the ability to retain it. Limiting voter rights is not best for Freeborn County. Enough of the madness! Do what is right for the residents of Freeborn County for a change.
