Principal’s Corner by Mark Grossklaus
As spring is just around the corner, we begin a very busy time at Albert Lea High School. You can access information about events at ALHS by going to link at the bottom of this column.
Our students begin to take state and national testing after spring break (March 11-15). Our eighth-graders take MCA tests in math, reading and science. Sophomores will take the MCA reading test and our juniors will take the MCA math test. This year, juniors will also take the ACT test, Accuplacer or ASVAB test based on student/parent decision and career plans the student is looking at. Our students involved in advanced placement courses will take their AP tests in early May. As testing is important in the lives of our students, many other things are taking place at ALHS.
Our winter sports are moving into the section playoffs. Please come and support the Tigers as they look to advanced to the state tournaments. Check out the opportunities to come and support our student athletes at www.big9conference.org/. Starting the week of March 1, students have the opportunity to register to participate in baseball, boys’ and girls’ golf, softball, boys’ tennis and track.
We also have some major events taking place over the next month. The Albert Lea High School Prom will take place April 27. The Grand Promenade will be in the auditorium and commons beginning at 3 p.m. Our annual senior awards night will take place May 8 at 6:30 p.m. Through the generosity of the Albert Lea community and the Albert Lea Educational Foundation, our seniors receive many scholarships in order to continue their education after graduation.
Also coming up May 3 is the Big Nine Music Festival at Albert Lea High School, where the ALHS band, choir and orchestra will compete. On May 11, 12 and 13, the spring play, “The House on Pooh Corner,” by A. A. Milne and adapted by Bettye Knapp, will take place. We will then have our spring band concert April 29, our orchestra concert May 10 and our choir concert May 13.
On May 17, the Albert Lea High School class of 2019 will graduate. This is the 135th graduation at ALHS. Tickets are required to attend graduation. Our last day of school for students in eighth through 11th grade is May 21.
As you can see, our spring semester at ALHS is a very busy time for our students and we welcome you to come see them participate in extracurricular activities. Information about Albert Lea High School and spring events can be found at www.alschools.org/our-schools/albert-lea-high-school.
