5 things to do this weekend

1. Lake cleanup day

The Albert Lea Lakes Foundation will coordinate the 2019 lake cleanup day this Saturday, after last weekend’s forecast postponed the original date. Volunteers will assemble Saturday at Frank Hall Park to receive cleanup supplies and then spread out to different areas of Freeborn County lakes, rivers and waterways to pick up trash that has accumulated over the winter. The new Adopt a Drain program will also be a part of this year’s cleanup, in memory of longtime Lakes Foundation and Albert Lea advocate Dan Borland. To join the cleanup efforts, check in at Frank Hall Park between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, when bags and supplies will be handed out.

2. Zed-Leppelin

According to a press release, a nationally renowned Led Zeppelin tribute band will come to town to restore “the thunder to the hammer of the gods.” Zed-Leppelin will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Acrylic amber drums, double-neck guitars, fluid bass lines and wailing vocals are just the tip of the iceberg, according to the release. Tickets are $22 at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.

3. Big Nine Music Festival

Albert Lea High School musicians will be joined by others from across the state as the school hosts the 86th annual Big Nine Music Festival on Friday. The event will bring more than 2,000 students to Albert Lea for a day of band and orchestra performances at Albert Lea High School and choir performances at First Lutheran Church. All daytime performances are free to the public. The band performs at 8:15 a.m. in the high school auditorium, the orchestra at 9:45 a.m. in the gym and the choir at 1:15 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Additionally, some students were selected for the grand finale concert, which is $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the high school gym.

4. Harmony Junction

Harmony Junction Barbershop Chorus will perform “Main Street, USA” at 3 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling 507-373-3855 or at Addie’s Floral and Gifts, Hy-Vee, Marketplace Foods or the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce.

5. Community meals

There will be a burger basket and silent auction fundraiser for the Freeborn Eagles rugby club from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Albert Lea Eagles Club. Entry is $8 and the public is welcome to attend.

Lunder Lutheran Church in Albert Lea will have a breakfast fundraiser and bake sale from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday for $5. Sausage gravy on a baking powder biscuit, scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and toast, or pancakes with sausage, bacon or ham will be on the menu. Proceeds will go to the church’s building security system.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will have its spring salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the church in Albert Lea. Lunch will be $7 with sloppy joes, salad, bars and coffee on the menu. There will be a quilt raffle drawing for $5 a ticket or three for $10, with other quilts for sale.
