At about 9:43 p.m. Friday, Albert Lea police and fire were dispatched with Mayo Clinic Ambulance to a child who had been struck by a vehicle at Ramsey Street and St. Thomas Avenue in Albert Lea, according to an Albert Lea police press release.
Upon arrival, officers found that a 2-year-old Gianlivan Bermudez of Albert Lea and the child’s mother, Stephanie Calderon, 29, of Albert Lea had both been struck by a Toyota Highlander, driven by Brandon Tlamka, 33 of Albert Lea.
Bermudez and Calderon were transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea with unspecified injuries. Bermudez was then flown to St. Marys in Rochester. Both were later released and returned home.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Bermudez and his brother had crossed Ramsey Street to the north, according to the press release. Tlamka was eastbound on Ramsey approaching St. Thomas Avenue. Calderon reportedly entered the intersection to wave off Tlamka as the children had crossed.
Tlamka had braked and struck both victims with the front of the vehicle, the report states.
A blood test was taken from Tlamka, and no alcohol was reportedly detected.
The crash remains under investigation. Check back with the Tribune for more information as it becomes available.
