Just two days after falling to Austin by one run, the Albert Lea Post 56 American Legion baseball team battled to get its retribution against the Interstate 90 rivals.

The Leo Carey legion team scored eight runs through the first three innings on its way to a 8-4 win over Austin.

Jack Jellinger picked up a single in the first inning, however, it wasn’t until the second inning when Albert Lea opened a sizable lead. Brock Hammer reached on an error, followed by a single from Caden Gardner. Koby Hendrickson hit in the first run of the game with a short single and Jake Ball brought in two runs with a one-out double. Jake Weseman hit into a groundout, but brought a run across in the process.

Post 56 went into the bottom of the third inning with four runs and were not done scoring yet. Ian Ball reached on an error, Hammer hit his second single of the game and Gardner loaded the bases after another error from Austin. Hendrickson got his second RBI hitting into a fielder’s choice. Jake Ball knocked in his third run of the game with a single and Weseman picked up two more runs after a two-out single.

Albert Lea only put one more baserunner through the final four innings of the game, but fortunately that’s all they would need. Austin only mustered one run in the final three innings of play after trailing 8-3 after the fourth.

Hendrickson started the game on the mound and picked up the win for Albert Lea. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out four batters. Hammer came in for relief in the third inning giving up one run on three hits and striking out one. Blake Ulve started pitching in the fifth inning and put in the most innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.

Albert Lea will be back on the field Tuesday night when it travels to Rochester.
