Albert Lea drops duals against Mayo and Northfield

 

NORTHFIELD — The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team traveled to Northfield Thursday afternoon for its second triangular meet of the week, this time squaring off with Rochester Mayo and Northfield. 

In their first matchup of the day, the Tigers were shut out by the Spartans, 7-0. Senior Riley Johnson and junior Hannah Conn put up the biggest fight of the dual, falling in the No. 3 doubles match 6-3, 6-2.

Seniors Carley Talamantes and Madison Prihoda lost in the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-0, 6-0, and the team of seniors Brooke Maier and Kaedyn Kirchner lost the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 5-7.

In singles action, senior Samantha Skarstad lost in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Shelby Hanson and senior Maggie Moller both lost their matches 6-0, 6-0; and junior Alli Dulitz fell 6-1, 6-3 in her match at No. 4 singles.

The Tigers bounced back slightly in their second dual, however, still fell to the Raiders 5-2.

Picking up the wins for Albert Lea were the teams of Talamantes and Maier at the No. 1 doubles spot and Kirchner and Conn at the No. 2 spot. Talamantes and Maier won their match in an extremely close thriller, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), and Kirchner and Conn won their match 6-3, 6-3. The other doubles team of Johnson and junior Dominica Eckstrom fell in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.

The Tigers again struggled in singles matches. Hanson, Moller, Dulitz and Prihoda lost in the No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 spots, respectively. Hanson lost 6-1, 6-1; Moller lost 6-2, 6-1; Dulitz lost 6-4, 6-3; and Prihoda lost 6-1, 6-0.

As a team the Tigers fall to 0-4 on the season and will play again Tuesday, when they host the Huskies of Owatonna in their first home match of the season.
