A.L. football dominates Mankato 50 years ago

50 years: 1969
• Sid Hartman and Paul Giel announced running back Bill Severtson of Glenville was picked to the All-State team on the Prep Parade show on WCCO Radio for his play in the Trojan’s 14-12 win over Rose Creek the previous week. The Trojans were coached by Wayne Olson
• The Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to Mankato and took home a 39-6 victory over the Scarlets. Rod Tovar scored twice, with Mike Pappas, Jerry Ellinghuysen, Dan Fahrman and Jerry Sallee also scoring for the Tigers.
• The Freeborn Yeomen football team celebrated homecoming with a 36-8 win over Kiester. Bob Christopherson, Eugene Chicos and LaMar Staloch scored three of the touchdowns in the win.
• The Minnesota Twins lost the first two games of American League Championship play 4-3 and 1-0 at Baltimore. In game two, Curt Motton’s pinch hit single scored Boog Powell in the eleventh inning was the game winner for the Orioles. Dave McNally pitched all eleven innings to get the win.
• The Alden football team defeated Elmore 28-16 in a game played in Elmore. Ross Svenningsen scored two touchdowns for the Blackhawks with, Tom Wetzell and Rich Hemmingsen each scoring once.
25 years: 1994
• The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team defeated Caledonia, 6-0. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Tracy Dickerman, Julie Satre, Erin Kohl, Melanie Morfitt, Aly Haun and Jenny Woodruff.
• The Albert Lea Tigers football team celebrated homecoming with a 42-6 win over St. Cloud-Apollo. Greg Larson’s two touchdowns along with scores from Mitch Edwards, Adam Conn, Jeremy Caron and Marty Smith led the Tigers.
•The Albert Lea JV girls’ soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Winona. Mandy Jorgenson scored the only goal for the Tigers, who were 0-2-1 on the year.
10 years: 2009
• Cal Pirsig delivered his third consecutive game-winning goal and his eighth goal of the season as the Albert Lea Tigers boys’ soccer team defeated Rochester John Marshall 2-1 in overtime.
• A winless Albert Lea Tigers football team pulled off a stunning 26-21 win over No. 7-ranked Rochester Century at Hammer Field. Luke Grossman rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns with Jordan Cooper adding the other score for the Tigers.
• Brett Favre became the first quarterback in NFL history to beat all 32 teams as he led the Minnesota Vikings to a 30-23 win over the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome. Favre threw for three touchdowns and 271 yards to improve the Vikings record to 4-0 on the season.
This year
• Congratulations to 2019 Alden-Conger graduate Erica Bute, who was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for the Augustana volleyball team this past week. The freshman ranks first in the conference, with 6.26 digs per set.
