5 things to do this weekend

Albert Lea Fire Rescue will have its annual open house this weekend in honor of National Fire Prevention Week. The open house will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the fire station, 221 E. Clark St. in Albert Lea. There will be numerous demonstrations and displays, and cookies and refreshments will be served. Those attending can meet the firefighters and see the fire trucks up close. This year, those attending who are 18 years old and older will have a chance to win a ride 134 feet up in the air on Ladder 916. There will also be buses taken over to the new fire station site off of Newton Avenue at 11:15 a.m. and noon.

2. Fall Family Bonfire

There will be a Fall Family Bonfire put on from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday around the fire pit near the cottage in Edgewater Park.

In addition to a bonfire, there will be yard games and hammocks, as well as entertainment provided by Albert Lea High School musicians Maggie Moller and Carley Talamantes. S’mores and cider will also be available at the free event.

3. Choose Kindness with RAD Zoo

In trying to teach children the importance of being kind to animals, Albert Lea Public Library will host a presentation by RAD Zoo from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the library, 211 E. Clark St. in Albert Lea. The free event is part of the Choose Civility initiative.

4. Met Opera: Live in HD

The Met: Live in HD season in Albert Lea opens this weekend. “Turandot” will be broadcast starting at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center in downtown Albert Lea. According to the theater’s website, “thrilling dramatic soprano Christine Goerke brings her fierce portrayal of the title princess with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium for Franco Zeffirelli’s dazzling production of Puccini’s final masterpiece.” Tickets are $20.

5. ‘For Love Alone’

“For Love Alone” highlights work from textiles artist Maggie Thompson and explores themes of grieving, loss and Thompson’s Native American Ojibwe heritage. It will be on display through Oct. 26 at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, which is open 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
