The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team hosted Rochester John Marshall Thursday, night hoping to get back to its winning ways after a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Mankato West one week ago.
The Tigers and Rockets battled back and forth through all three periods, but senior Campbell Cichosz sealed the game with a late goal to put the Tigers on top 5-4.
The Tigers were the first team on the scoreboard when junior Logan Hacker found the back of the net with 12 minutes remaining in the period. Cichosz and junior Blake Ulve assisted on the goal. The Rockets answered right back with a goal of their own roughly three minutes later to tie the game 1-1, where it would stay until the end of the period.
About three minutes into the second period, Albert Lea took the lead back when Ulve scored on a power-play goal assisted by Cichosz. However, John Marshall came back just 10 seconds of game play later to tie the game once again. John Marshall took the lead for itself with under two minutes remaining in the second period on a power-play goal of its own.
Just like the Rockets did to them, the Tigers came back just seconds later to tie the game back at 3-3. Junior Jacob Prihoda scored the goal for the Tigers, assisted by junior Sam Witham.
The second period ended with both teams knotted at 3-3.
Early in the third and final period, Witham scored a goal of his own; Cichosz was again in on the assist.
The Rockets looked like they would send the game to overtime after they scored a goal with under four minutes remaining. However, Cichosz pushed the Tigers back into the lead, scoring his own goal after assisting on three previous scores.
Sophomore Braden Fjelsta was in the net for Albert Lea, saving 10 of the 14 shots on goal by John Marshall.
The Tigers climb to 6-8-1 on the season and will play Austin on the road Tuesday.
