The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team played on the road against Rochester Lourdes/Dover-Eyota Saturday night in the second round of the Section 1A tournament.

While the Tigers were able to hold the No. 8-ranked Eagles to just three goals throughout the game, their offense came up empty, falling 3-0 and ending their season.

The Tigers got an early advantage in the game when an Eagle player was called for a minor tripping penalty in the fifth minute of the game. However, the Eagles turned the tide when they scored a short-handed goal 21 seconds after the penalty.

Emma Schmitz scored for the Eagles and Abby Wick was there with the assist.

Albert Lea’s Daysha Lutrell was called for a interference penalty in the sixth minute to give Lourdes another advantage. Albert Lea held strong to not allow a goal during the two-minute penalty period, but Lourdes did add another goal before the first period was over.

Delaney Fleming scored for the Eagles in the 15th minute of the first period with Kylie VerNess in on the assist, taking a 2-0 lead into the first break.

The Tigers fired off six shots in the first period, however, none of them hit the mark. Tigers junior Maddie Schneider saved 14 shots, while giving up two.

The Eagles were only able to add one goal to their score in the second period midway through the second. However, the Tigers offense was stifled through the period, only getting off one shot on goal to the stout Eagles defense.

Katelyn Steven and Laynee Behrends were each called for a minor hooking penalty in the eighth and 15th minute of the second period, respectively.

Albert Lea’s defense shut Lourdes out in the third and final period, but once again the Albert Lea offense failed to produce, taking only three shots on goal.

The Tigers end their first season under new head coach Mark Goskeson with a record of 12-15. They achieved their goal of reaching 12 wins, set at the beginning of the season.

There are seven seniors who will be moving on from the team after this season, including Behrends, Steven, Lutrell, Rylee Bjorklund, Mia Fjelsta, Sydney Collins and Angeline Minear.
