50 years ago: 1970
• Rich Holtan led the Albert Lea B-squad basketball team with 17 points as the Bengals defeated Rochester John Marshall 44-34.
• Steve Feist scored 23 points as Wells defeated Glenville 86-61 in basketball action. Wayne Perleberg and Darrell Monson led the Trojans with 10 points.
• Dale Anderson and Mark Tovar of Albert Lea won their divisions at the regional Golden Gloves tournament in Fairmont and were set to compete at the Midwest Golden Gloves tournament in Minneapolis.
25 years ago: 1995
• Jeremy Ferrington scored two goals as the Albert Lea B-Bantam hockey team improved to 30-3-1 on the year with a victory over Farmington at Albert Lea City Arena.
• The Albert Lea sixth-grade girls’ traveling basketball team traveled to Faribault and came home with second-place trophies. Leading scores for Albert Lea were Heidi Morreim, Afton Delger, Amber Sickels, Michelle Murray, Kasey Lueck and Jenny Elseth.
• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team fell to 3-12 on the year as they were defeated by Rochester Mayo 77-62 in Rochester. Scott Erickson led the Tigers with 20 points. Ryan Cafourek added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
• The Albert Lea junior varsity hockey team clinched at least a tie for the second straight Big Nine Conference junior varsity season with a 3-2 win over Rochester John Marshall. Jesse McGill scored two goals, including the game winner with 10 minutes to go to lead the Bengals.
10 years ago: 2010
• Abbey Arends set the Albert Lea girls’ basketball single-game scoring record when she poured in 37 points in the Tigers’ 72-58 victory over Fairmont.
• Senior Madi Passingham scored on a penalty shot with 2:19 left to give the visiting Albert Lea girls’ hockey team a 2-1 victory over New Prague in the opening round of the Section 1A girls’ hockey playoffs. The Tigers were slated to face Faribault in the semifinal game.
• Dave Huston took first place and Brian Nielsen took second in the Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club ice fishing contest that was a part of their Super Hole Sunday event. Nick Kruse and Ben Lares won the auger race, drilling 129 holes in 20 minutes.
This year
• Sorenson’s Appliance and TV is sponsoring a free family event called the Spin-Tacular Basketball Show from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at Albert Lea High School. The event features Tanya and Caleb Crevier, who will dazzle the crowd with ball tricks and participation from the audience.
