Max Meyer has been ranked the No. 6 overall 2020 MLB Draft prospect by The Athletic, as revealed in Keith Law’s annual listing of his top-30-rated draft prospects.
In being ranked the No. 6 overall draft prospect, Meyer appears primed to be one of the first collegiate players taken off the board at the 2020 MLB Draft. This represents a significant jump for the Gopher ace, who was previously ranked as highly as No. 25 in this year’s draft pool by MLB Pipeline.
Although the 2020 season ended prematurely, Meyer’s junior performance on the mound provided more than enough evidence to project him into the top-half of the first round of the upcoming draft. If the 2020 MLB Draft were to indeed play out in such a manner, Meyer would represent Minnesota’s most recent first round draft pick since Glen Perkins was selected 22nd overall in 2004.
Through four starts in 2020, Meyer dominated to the tune of a 3-1 record and 1.95 ERA, striking out an incredible 46 batters across 27 2/3 innings pitched. Opposing hitters batted just .155 against Meyer in 2020.
As a result of those numbers, Meyer ends the season tied for the fifth-most strikeouts (46) in the NCAA during the 2020 campaign. Meyer’s 14.96 K/9 ranked 22nd in the nation, while his three victories tied for 23rd in the country.
Through three seasons in Maroon & Gold, Meyer sports a 10-7 record with a lifetime 2.07 ERA over the course of 148 innings of work. During that span, the right-hander registered 187 strikeouts and held hitters to a .187 batting average. Having worked primarily as a reliever during his freshman season and part of his sophomore campaign, Meyer also owns 18 career saves as a Gopher.
Meyer was previously drafted out of Woodbury High School in 2017 by the Minnesota Twins in the 34th round, but will in all likelihood see that stock rise significantly come the 2020 MLB Draft.
