Organization: Albert Lea Farmers Market
Project: Power of Produce program
Report: As members of the Power of Produce club, local children ages 4 to 12 years old receive a $2 token every time they attend the farmers market. They can then use their token to purchase fruits or vegetables from the vendors at the market. Many of the vendors have embraced the program and make a point to offer produce in sizes priced at $2 to make it easier for children to shop, according to a press release.
Last year 287 children signed up for the program, the release stated, and 1,184 tokens were handed out. The $3,000 Freeborn County Community Foundation grant will get the market close to being able to cover another year of tokens for the Power of Produce program.
